SYRIA: US State Department bets on Muslim Brotherhood. | A diary of deception and distortion

American sources have been suggesting strongly over the last month that there has been a major policy shaft at the State Department -- in favour of the Muslim Brotherhood. While anti-Obama conspiracists will have a field day with this, the reality is infinitely more complex than any idea of a closet Islamist President slightly off his rocker.

"Let's just say State has grown up quite a bit since the Arab Spring," says a trusted Washington source. "There was always the fear that Islamic radicals would benefit from the instability, but there's a realism that says we must engage with them."

The majority line at State today is, astonishingly, that the Muslim Brotherhood is going to be the dominant force in Middle Eastern politics for some time to come, and America wants to be on the winning side -- not left out in the cold as, yet again, the Great Satan.

Evidence of this appeared yesterday when the pro-Christian Twitter site Persecution.org was retweeted by Daily Telegraph et all blogger Ed West as saying, "Senator Jim Webb to Single-Handedly Kill Legislation Protecting Christians in the Middle East". Bipartisan Congressional legislation to send protection envoys to the Middle East passed the House of Reps by a huge 402-20 majority, but was rigorously opposed by the State Department. State recently issued a paper somewhat blandly suggesting that the 'protection envoy' role would be 'unnecessary, duplicative and likely counter-productive'.

aangirfan: MORSI SIDES WITH SAUDIS

Egypt's Mohammed Morsi has made the first foreign visit of his presidency to Saudi Arabia, friend of the CIA and Mossad and enemy of Syria and Iran.

Morsi needs Saudi-money-to help Egypt out of its economic crisis. The Saudis have recently put $1 billion into Egypt's central bank.

Egypt's foreign minister, Nabil el-Araby, has made 'tentative overtures' to Iran.

Egyptian Leader's Visit Sends Signal to Saudis‎-

But, Morsi's visit to Saudi Arabia is probably intended to send the signal that Egypt supports Saudi Arabia, rather than Iran and Syria.

Michele Bachmann Says Muslim Brotherhood Has Infiltrated The American Government - [VIDEO]

Bachman backs up claims

Enter Congressman Ellison. On July 13th, he sent a-letter-to his five colleagues "to gather more information on the allegations you made" regarding Abedin, as well as those levied against "Brotherhood operatives" within the government, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) and Muslim Advocates. Ellison implies that the sole source of Bachmann's allegations is the "MuslimBrotherhoodinAmerica.com, a-Web site created by Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy (CSP)." Ellison contends that Gaffney has been-"widely discredited" and said he "has a long history of making unsubstantiated anti-Muslim allegations." He finishes his letter with a request for "a full accounting of the sources you used to make the-serious allegations against the individuals and organizations in your letters. If there is not-credible, substantial evidence for your allegations, I sincerely hope that you will publically (sic) clear their names." Ms. Bachmann was more than happy to reply -- and her 16-page-letter-containing-59 separate footnotes completely undercuts Ellison's implication that Gaffney was her only source. "I do note that the facts we presented in the Inspector General request letters are based on information presented by U.S. Government officials in court documents, court evidence, correspondence and briefings with Congress and public statements, in addition to known media reporting," Bachmann writes. "These letters were far from sole-sourced as you maintain in your letter."

Jeremy Hunt: 'completely normal' for contractor to fail to deliver - Telegraph

Appearing on the BBC's Andrew Marr show, Mr Hunt said that ministers had been assured until recently that G4S was "on track," but continued to maintain contingency planning involving the military in case problems emerged.

He added: "We of course have been monitoring the situation at G4S and their management had told us right up to last week that everything was all right.

"We were asking the right questions and we were being told that everything was on track.

"At the moment that we were told that they weren't going to be able to manage we activated that plan.

"I don't think this is a moment for getting into the blame game. G4S have been quite honourable. It is completely normal that you are going to find some contractors on a project of this size who are not going to be able to deliver."

Turkmenistan, Indonesia intensify economic ties - Trend

Bangladesh moves closer to joining TAPI project

Bangladesh has moved closer to joining Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India (TAPI) gas pipeline project as Asian Development Bank (ADB) has asked the economic relations division of Bangladesh's finance ministry to submit a formal request.

The TAPI steering committee, at its meeting on May 23, had discussed Bangladesh's request for inclusion into the pipeline project.-The ADB has requested Bangladesh to submit the request by July 15.

Bangladesh is facing severe energy shortage which has affected power generation, pushing the government to take up costly rental power plant projects as quick solutions.

TAPI would be more feasible for Bangladesh if it is ascertained that the gas imported from Turkmenistan is cheaper than the LNG import from Middle East.

In May, Turkmenistan on signed an agreement for the sale and purchase of natural gas as part of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project.-Country's state gas company Turkmengaz signed gas sales and purchase agreements with Pakistan's-Inter State Gas Systems-and Indian state-run utility-GAIL.

The TAPI gas pipeline will supply gas via a 1,735 km pipeline from Turkmenistan into Afghanistan and finally via Pakistan to India. The pipeline is expected to be complete by 2016. The pipeline's capacity will stand at 90 million cubic meters of gas a day

Klaus Regling has never made a big deal out of his position in the past, and that's not likely to change now. The 61-year-old from LŸbeck is not known for pithy comments. Rather, he's a sober, pragmatic worker known for his structured thinking. His motto: "There's no magic cure."

He brings with him almost 40 years of work experience. He began his career in the 1970s at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where - among other things - he contributed to the debt restructuring of Morocco and Indonesia.

Later, at the German Finance Ministry, he made a significant contribution to the preparations for Germany's entrance into the common European currency - he's essentially been with the euro since its birth. In 2001, he moved to the European Commission in Brussels.

Drug money saved banks in global crisis, claims UN advisor [2009 re-run]

Drugs money worth billions of dollars kept the financial system afloat at the height of the global crisis, the United Nations' drugs and crime tsar has told the Observer. Antonio Maria Costa, head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, said he has seen evidence that the proceeds of organised crime were "the only liquid investment capital" available to some banks on the brink of collapse last year. He said that a majority of the $352bn (Ł216bn) of drugs profits was absorbed into the economic system as a result. This will raise questions about crime's influence on the economic system at times of crisis. It will also prompt further examination of the banking sector as world leaders, including Barack Obama and Gordon Brown, call for new International Monetary Fund regulations. Speaking from his office in Vienna, Costa said evidence that illegal money was being absorbed into the financial system was first drawn to his attention by intelligence agencies and prosecutors around 18 months ago. "In many instances, the money from drugs was the only liquid investment capital. In the second half of 2008, liquidity was the banking system's main problem and hence liquid capital became an important factor," he said. Some of the evidence put before his office indicated that gang money was used to save some banks from collapse when lending seized up, he said. "Inter-bank loans were funded by money that originated from the drugs trade and other illegal activities... There were signs that some banks were rescued that way." Costa declined to identify countries or banks that may have received any drugs money, saying that would be inappropriate because his office is supposed to address the problem, not apportion blame. But he said the money is now a part of the official system and had been effectively laundered.

Gene-swapping vaccines spawn lethal poultry virus: experts | Reuters

Mexico kills 2.5 mn poultry to contain bird flu - FRANCE 24

Officials have slain 2.5 million birds at poultry farms in western Mexico over the past three weeks in an attempt to contain a bird flu outbreak, the agriculture ministry said. The virus responsible for Mexico's current bird flu outbreak, H7N3, has occasionally caused human disease in various parts of the world, according to the United Nations, but has not shown itself to be easily transmittable between humans.

After importing one million vaccines from Pakistan, the farming officials said they have developed a seed-based vaccine that they will deliver to four laboratories to produce over 80 million doses initially.

Health officials keep a close watch on such outbreaks since so-called swine flu broke out in Mexico in 2009. The H1N1 virus spread into a global pandemic that claimed the lives of 17,000 people.

Anthrax outbreak kills cows, 50 people treated - The Local

An anthrax outbreak has left at least nine cows dead and 50 people on antibiotics in eastern Germany, authorities said on Friday. Experts fear the cause was infected dead animals buried where the cows were grazing.

While the exact cause of the outbreak remains unknown, Heinrich Neubaue, head of the institute for bacterial infection and zoonotic diseases at the Friedrich-Loeffler Institute, said that the most common reason was animals grazing in a field where animals with anthrax have been buried.

Drugs arsenal could help end AIDS: WHO - FRANCE 24

Thirty years into the AIDS epidemic, a cure remains elusive but a growing arsenal of drugs could someday help end new infections, the World Health Organization's HIV/AIDS chief says.

Recent studies have shown the potential benefits of starting treatment early, before the viral load gets too high, as a way to protect an infected person's health and lower the risk of passing the disease to a partner.

Research on using ARVs as a way to prevent HIV in healthy people -- also known as pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP -- has shown conflicting results, with some promise seen in studies on heterosexual couples and gay men who took the pills faithfully.

The key is figuring out how to best manage the latest advances, Gottfried Hirnschall said in an interview with AFP during a visit to Washington this week ahead of the International AIDS Conference that begins here July 22.

Antiretroviral drugs may reduce the risk of infected people passing on the virus, and may prevent healthy people from becoming infected through sex with HIV-positive partners, but the new possibilities have also stirred controversy.

Australian boys to be given HPV vaccine - PinkPaper.com

Australia will become the first country to administer the human papillomavirus vaccine to teenage boys.

The human papillomavirus virus is linked to genital warts as well as various types of cancer including cervical and anal.

Gay men are in the highest risk group to contract the virus, since the vaccine started being administered to teenage girls. Since its introduction, the vaccine has proved effective in reducing infection and as an indirect result protecting heterosexual boys.

The introduction of the vaccine to boys as well as girls is expected next year and should significantly lower the risk of infection to gay men in Australia.
